As I have gotten older, I have learned to balance relaxation and socializing. In socializing, though, I usually talk about personal matters. However, as is human nature, business is always a conversation that comes up.

Anyone who has worked in marketing will tell you that marketing is a dynamic, demanding and complex profession, characterized by the art of problem-solving and understanding human behavior, and focused on the power of storytelling.

The real importance of network marketing

I have written before that entrepreneurs are a rare breed, but it is a mistake that many people make to think that they should only interact with other entrepreneurs. In fact, expanding your friendships to include "non-entrepreneurs" will help protect your business opportunities and broaden your access to the thinking, knowledge, and resources you need to move forward.

However, it is important to consider networking first. Gone are the days of handing a brightly colored, glossy, double-sided business card to a stranger and hoping that something might come from it.

These days, networking is a serious investment that requires a lot of time and effort. In fact, it now feels more like a human relationship than a purely transactional or mutually beneficial one. When I look at my best relationships, they have developed over the years and most of them have become friends.

The collector effect of a proven CEO

One of my qualities is that I am an avid collector of personal mentors. One of my favorite mentors is Peter Matlab, Deputy CEO of BSA Africa. Furthermore, one of the most memorable things he said to me in his very pretentious British accent was, "Networking is about friendship, and true networking is about meeting your family, having lunch at home, and finding out what they value outside of business."

As busy entrepreneurs operating in Africa, we need to go a step further and spend real quality time with the people in our network. What we need to do is not desperately seek funding or opportunities. We also need to keep in mind what this means for my network.

Can't we just give people something instead of constantly asking for their support? If you come across an opportunity that has nothing to do with your business, pass it up. But to be a constant recipient in such an ecosystem, you need to be an active giver.

Be bold. Courage is one of the most essential elements of your job. This is especially true in the creative fields. If you make a mistake on a whiteboard or in a tweet, many people will hear about it, and you need to be brave enough to withstand the pressure. You will constantly receive feedback on your work from various groups and stakeholders, which you need to deal with constructively.
Expand your network of contacts. Much of marketing requires influencing people's behavior and decisions, and influence comes from relationships. One of the keys to marketing success is building and maintaining relationships and connections.

Be flexible: The skills required of marketing managers are varied, and those working in this field need to be flexible in terms of learning and developing their skills throughout their career. In the ever-changing world of media, it is an advantage to have a wide range of skills.
What advice would you give to young Africans who want to pursue a career in marketing?

Know yourself. During my studies I switched from accounting to marketing and here's why. I didn't have the passion for accounting that my friends studying accounting had.

Be a strong thinking partner. Mentors, coaches, friends, colleagues, siblings, parents, etc. It's important to have someone who will ask tough questions, give you feedback and help you achieve your goals.
You are constantly learning and re-learning. 

We live in a rapidly changing world. Marketing is also rapidly evolving, and the more experience you gain in the various aspects of the industry and marketing, the faster this evolution will be. To keep up with the pace of change, you need to shed old habits and develop new habits and skills.

Discover your passion. Marketing is a complex field, budgets are getting tighter and tighter, and the economic and industry pressures are immense. That's why it's significant to love what you do and have the energy to overcome challenges.
And above all: do it, even if you are afraid of it. It can be scary to think about your professional future, go to job interviews and move up. But if you stick with what you love to do, sooner or later it will pay off.

While this may seem convenient and exclusive, it can lead to prejudice ("We're on the right track, guys") or negative repercussions ("Nobody wants to fund us/the world is against us").

But if you talk to your funders, you can learn what they think about debt vs. equity and hear what they think about the businesses they are interested in. Spending time with lawyers will help you learn about the types of FDI taking place in Africa and help you understand some of the structural issues that arise in the local market.
